YouTube Premium’s ad-free streaming and offline video downloading features are tempting additions. However, a monthly membership to enjoy these benefits would cost you back $11.99 or £11.99—an amount that has always seemed excessive to us.
If you are a full-time college student, though, you may be eligible for a special YouTube Premium Student plan that cuts the monthly fee to only £6.99/$6.99.
Here’s how to get YouTube Premium at a discounted rate if you’re a student.
Who may sign up for YouTube Premium?
YouTube claims that all full-time college students are entitled to a student account. The verification process is done by an external service called SheerID, so as long as your school is included in their database, you should be fine to go.
You will be asked to give evidence of your student status, such as an email account from your school, scans of your student ID, and even a letter verifying your enrollment.
If you don’t verify your account again every year (up to a maximum of four years), your YouTube Premium account will return to the basic plan.
What exactly do I receive with a YouTube Premium Student account?
The YouTube Premium Student package has perks including ad-free viewing and offline access to videos, among others. A YouTube Music Premium membership is also included, so you may download songs and albums from a library of millions of tunes. You can also view videos offline after downloading them.

To sign up for a discounted family or student plan, visit the YouTube Premium website.
The Student option and a button labeled “Try it for free” will show up on the screen. There is now a free 30-day trial available on YouTube so you can determine whether the service is right for you before signing up. Thus, press the button to start creating your account.
Keep this in mind. You must cancel any existing YouTube Premium subscriptions before signing up for the student plan.
The next thing you know, a dialog box will inform you that you’re being sent to the SheerID website for verification. Select Next to keep going.
To verify your student status, please fill out the form below. When prompted to submit papers for SheerID verification, selecting Next will take you to the next available screen. Now that you’ve finished entering this information, click the “Submit” button so the validation process can start.
You should get confirmation within 24 hours in the US and up to 48 hours in other countries, although YouTube says this should happen instantly.
Once you get an instant confirmation, you may complete creating your account by entering your payment information and clicking the Buy button.
If you’re forced to wait while SheerID does the necessary checks, just log into YouTube thereafter, click the user profile icon, and then choose Paid Memberships. After receiving a prompt to finish setting up the student plan, you may begin using the service.
